Paro was created for the Source Engine Discord 2020 Wingman Contest by Roald Van Der Scheur and myself. Roald created a blockout based on the Tiger's Nest temple complex in Bhutan, and asked me to help him bring it to life.
What I found particularly interesting in this project was taking architectural elements of the Bhutanese dzong, which are remarkably consistent, and translating them into modular kits that could be used to quickly transform the blockout into a fully-dressed map. The roofs provided a particular challenge, as Roald's blockout buildings were not created using any sort of size standards. While it's not completely polished or very detailed yet, I'm very proud of the work I was able to accomplish within a short 1-month artpass and I'm really starting to appreciate the benefits of working in passes over my old chaotic "attack from all sides" approach. There are also a very small number of unique texture sets used in the map which greatly contributed to the speed of iteration during development, as well as boosting in-game performance. |
