I created Royal back in 2015 for a contest hosted by Mapcore. One thing that stands out from this project was that I took time to develop the architecture of the bombsites before the layout was final. Although this might be considered bad practice, in this case it really helped refocus the whole map for me and I was quickly able to finish the design and start my first art pass. Back then I had no real workflow for level art, so I attacked on every front at once and got the first pass done over the course of a couple of months. I made a few custom assets but relied mostly on what Valve had made, especially assets from the map Cobblestone.
I have fond memories of working on this map because there were no real obstacles along the way. Unlike most collaborations, I knew what each area would become because I had made it myself. Royal was included in Operation Wildfire, an official event for CS:GO that lasted from February 17th to July 15th, 2016. |
